Tigers and toilet paper extinct in Cape Town

China may very well be the world’s largest trading economy with trade surpassing $4 trillion, but it would be even larger if the importer of Tsingtao beer into SA woke up. It’s the second week of 2014 and Asian beer is out of stock in Cape Town. No Tiger from Asian tiger Singapore, either. South China Dim Sum Bar owner Ed Hung has been forced to fall back on Stella Artois made by the world’s largest brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev. It was either that or Pilsner Urquell brewed by #2 SABMiller. A day after Cape Town is voted #1 tourist destination by the New York Times and there’s no Asian beer or toilet paper in Camps Bay guest houses. And I thought Mickey Mouse lived in Disneyland.

Sounds like a great opportunity for Rudolph Fourie to get some of his Ola Dubh (above) into Long Street. Meanwhile, we’d luckily brought our own in the shape of a bottle of Ian Downie’s wonderful Terra Madre Pommes Classique 2009 cider which worked a charm with the pork belly sandwiches. What is it about Elgin apples and pork – is this the start of trotter terroir?
