Henna Pick (below) provincial winner and a finalist in the 2013 Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors competition, certainly has the right credentials in the name department to win a meat competition as Alan Pick owns the legendary Butcher’s Shop & Grill in Sandton. Ms. Pick was picked at Muratie on Saturday at the Checkers Battle of die Berge Competition. As the provincial boerewors queen, Henna will compete against nine other finalists for a fun-filled weekend at Sun City and the grand finalé on 5 October 2013.
Alan is unlikely to make the Sun City final as it clashes with the Cape Winemakers Guild Auction at Spier. Alan is the senior rain maker at the auction although this year he’s unlikely to emerge as top buyer as an international collector, convinced that the top end of SA wine is too cheap, has vowed to take Auction prices to new heights.
Meanwhile feedback from last month’s upcountry tasting of Auction wines held at the Pretoria Country Club revealed much work still to be done on quality with whites in particular disappointing according to kenners present. “Many of the wines on offer have no place on the Auction” commented one wino who won’t be buying.
