So the bottle has claimed another victim: Lou Reed, RIP. Lou was no poseur, he really did Walk on the Wild Side. Wild Turkey, maybe even Wild Africa, that KWV knock-off of Amarula. While heroin may be hip, booze is cheaper and just as effective. So no surprise then to read in the Spectator earlier this month that when Iggy Pop recorded his masterpiece Raw Power in London in the early 1970s, his drug of choice was Harveys Bristol Cream.
Which makes me wonder whatever happened to the Responsible Drinking Media Awards this year? I got the press release that heavy drinkers Chris Moerdyk, Raymond Louw, Pippa Green and Caro Smit would judge entries that closed at the end of May, but never found out who won. Google turns up last year’s winners. Come on Brand House, surely the aim of the Awards is to publicize the evils of demon drink? Maybe a better use of the marketing moolah would be to give away copies of Lou’s Transformer LP in dodgy bars. Or would that be counter productive?
I do hope we win the Fine Brandy By Design mobile brandy bar competition as I’ve got my Thai ladyboys transcribing Walk of the Wild Side for Asian wind chimes in the Combi conversion, as I type.
PS. Looks like I was asleep. There was indeed an Awards bash at the One & Only and there winners were:
