In a nutshell:

  • Cradle of SA wine
  • Superior Sauvignon Blancs
  • Fantastic farm located restaurants

Back Label: The Constantia Valley was where it all started for SA wine three hundred and forty-eight years ago when Jan van Riebeeck confided to his diary “fine warm weather…  Today, praise be to God, wine was made for the first time from Cape grapes.”

Groot ConstantiaThose “Muscadel and other white round grapes, very fragrant and tasty” for that first wine were grown in the VOC garden in Cape Town by the appropriately named head gardener Hendrik Boom.  After vines were tried (and died on the site of the proposed soccer stadium in Green Point) van Riebeeck relocated the nascent industry to the woeste veld now known as Constantia.

As a bizarre historic aside, the VOC trademark lapsed and was picked up by teetotal Australian iron ore magnate Michael Wright for his Voyager Estate in Margaret River in 1995, so all those capsules featuring the interlocking VOC logo popular on the successors to Van Riebeeck’s drop, will needs be redesigned.  All music to the ears of Anthony Lane, Cape Town designer with the lion’s share of the lucrative label business.  This is guerilla marketing at the limit and hopefully a revenge Ned Kelly Bushwacker Shiraz is maturing in some cellar in deepest, darkest Robertson.
