The wine luvvies who chose the long road out to De Krans in Calitzdorp rather than the suburban charms of Constantia Fresh escaped the plague of mites living in the hay bales (as opposed to Constantia negociant Wade Bales) at Buitenverwachting on Saturday. Producers and punters alike got chowed from tit to toe:
What was left as a matter for speculation was the score out of 20 dear Angela awarded the mites. Meanwhile some of us in the Klein Karoo were also covered in angry looking red welts, with Fiona McDonald’s feet (below) especially affected.

perhaps the event can me moved to a more civilized venue like Elgin next year? Deepest Constantia is far too wild for some.
Constantia Fresh responds:
We understand that unfortunately numerous guests to Constantia Fresh this year have received bites and rashes that appear to have come from the hay bales. This is something we have never experienced before in the previous 5 years of this event or many other events that we have been involved with.
Rest assured, next year steps will be taken to ensure that nothing like this happens again. Please see the attached pdf document for more information about the Straw Itch Mites but thank you for attending Constantia Fresh 2014 and we look forward to seeing you again next year.
